Hole & Corner #8

Hole and Corner celebrates craft, beauty, passion and skill. It’s about people who spend more time ‘doing’ than ‘talking’, who put content above style, whose work is their life. Through a bi-annual print magazine and a daily updated digital alternative, we aim to promote local trade and talented individuals, whether professional or amateur, exploring and celebrating the landscape that inspires them. Combining these subjects with some of the world’s finest still life, style and fashion photographers, our goal is to present a lifestyle and culture in a way previously unseen. It is also our ambition to assist these craftsmen and women by providing a retail platform to help them share their products with a wider audience. Hole and Corner  believe in the finer details of life !

Issue 8:

Introducing the Senses Issue of Hole & Corner

What does it look like when Hole & Corner enters the realms of the senses?

Let us take you on a trip through taste, touch, smell, sight, hearing and, perhaps, even the elusive sixth sense.

Our Senses issue is the antidote to even the most jaded palete, as we’ve searched high and low to find contributors with the power to make us appreciate the world anew. We’ve got exclusive discussions with multi-sensory experts including Omer Arbel of Bocci lighting, scent archivist Sissel Tolaas, colour expert Pedro da Costa Felgueiras, product designer Russell Pinch, fragrance maker Lynn Harris and designer Faye Toogood.

Richard Benson braves storms and high seas to explore the people and the landscape that has made the island of Islay home to a growing band of the most prolific and revered whisky producers in the world. We’ve taken a trip to Daylesford Organic Farm in the Cotswolds, to James Cropper paper manufacturers in Cumbria and to the fragrant fields of Grasse with Hermès to examine how the unique properties of the land can inform our appreciation of the senses.

We talk disorientation and sense confusion with Turner Prize-winning artist and musician Martin Creed and sensory experience designer Nelly ben Hayoum (who has collaborated with everyone from Sigur Ros to NASA).  Elsewhere, we explore the notion of perfect palette with Michelin-starred chefs and Masters of Wine; uncover the fascinating story of Louis XIV’s own candlemakers; meet bionic eye makers and cyborgs; examine the strange phenomenon of synesthaesia and explore moments of extreme heightened awareness.

Our emphasis, as always, is on the craft, beauty, passion and skill involved at every process. Using some of the world’s greatest image-makers including Dan Tobin Smith, Laurence Ellis and Robert Wyatt, Issue 08 offers a true sensory overload for the reader.
