'Dirty Furniture' is a new independent biannual design magazine that uncovers the relationship between people and the things they live with. Conceived as a finite printed series of six and showcasing design’s best writers and emerging talents, each issue takes a piece of furniture as its theme and uses it as a springboard to explore topics spanning politics, design, history, technology, psychology, manufacturing, art – and the plain weird. With Sam Jacobs on sitcoms, Joanne MsNeil on foam, Jeremy Millar on Freud, and much more.
In our launch issue we look at the price tag of haunted furniture, the history of ‘comfort’ and the role of the sofa in sitcoms. We take the covers off Freud’s couch, peek into designers’ homes to see what sofa they live with, and scrutinise Tony Blair’s so-called ‘sofa politics’. Foam comes under the spotlight in a materials focus, manufacturing approaches are revealed and we interview a couchsurfer, an upholsterer and an antique dealer.
